Canary Islands sphere
The crew of the corvette Atrevida saw a light rise from the sea, then a vast, luminous sphere spread out in the sky. Hundreds of people across Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and Gran Canaria saw it. A doctor near Gáldar said he saw two tall figures inside a transparent sphere. The Spanish Air Force investigation was leaked in 1977 and officially declassified in 1994.
Explanation
Spanish researcher Ricardo Campo matched the 1976 sighting, and similar Canary Islands events of the period, to U.S. Navy submarine-launched Poseidon missile tests in the Atlantic, whose exhaust clouds glow in sunlight at high altitude. The Spanish Air Force report left it unexplained.
