George Pedley heard a hissing sound and saw a saucer-shaped object rise from a lagoon and climb away. In its place was a floating circle of flattened, clockwise-swirled reeds about 9 m across — the original "saucer nest".

Explanation

Police and the RAAF suggested a willy-willy (whirlwind) flattened the reeds; others considered it unexplained.
