Three young women said they saw a strange creature crouched near a wall, with vein-like marks on its skin, three bumps on its head and eyes like "two red balls". Rumours followed of military trucks carrying captured beings, bodies at hospitals, a police officer's death and animal deaths at the zoo. It became Brazil's best-known UFO story and a local tourist theme.
Explanation
A Brazilian Army inquiry concluded that the women had seen a local man with a mental disability, known as "Mudinho", and that the military movements were routine.
